The COVID-19 pandemic has had an immeasurable impact on the job market, with numerous companies embracing remote work for the safety of their employees. This has led to a surge in the demand for virtual jobs, especially in industries that can be remote. This study aims to examine if there is a causal relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in virtual jobs. From analyzing the popularity of virtual jobs over time, we found the results to support the hypothesis that COVID-19 has led to a spike in the interest in virtual jobs and that this upward trend is likely to persist as corporations become more resourceful in creating online jobs. This study highlights the impact of the pandemic on the job market and the potential benefits of increased flexibility and opportunities for online work.

Figure 1 depicts a random forest regression analysis that demonstrates the relationship between time and the popularity of virtual jobs. The random forest algorithm is a machine-learning technique that uses decision trees to build a predictive model. By using multiple decision trees and combining their predictions, the model can generate more accurate and reliable results than a single decision tree. The plot in Figure 1 provides insight into the strength and character of this relationship, allowing for a better understanding of the trends and patterns in virtual job popularity over time.

Figure 2 displays a word cloud that visualizes the frequency of words used throughout relevant literature. In this case, the word cloud depicts the most commonly used terms in research related to remote work and virtual jobs. The larger the word appears in the cloud, the more frequently it is used in the literature. As shown in Figure 2, the words “COVID,” “Remote,” “Work,” and “Pandemic” are the most commonly used terms in this context. A word cloud can be a useful tool for quickly identifying the most salient themes and topics in a large body of text.

Figure 3’s regression analysis displays a steeper slope after COVID-19 quarantine orders in the US were placed (March 12, 2020) compared to before, indicating that there was a significant increase in the search popularity of “remote jobs” following the onset of the pandemic (Jacobsen and Jacobsen 2020). This is consistent with the fact that many people were forced to work from home as a result of the pandemic, and others may have been looking for alternative work arrangements due to economic uncertainty. It’s also worth noting that the graph may reflect not only a change in people’s behavior but also a change in how they search for information. Specifically, people may have been more likely to search for “remote jobs” specifically because of the pandemic, whereas they may have used different search terms in the past. Overall, the graph suggests that the COVID pandemic had a significant impact on the search popularity of “remote jobs,” and this may reflect broader changes in how people work and seek employment.

The study examined the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in remote jobs in the United States. The data were collected by analyzing the popularity of the search term “remote jobs” on Google Trends from March 2018 to February 2023. The study found that there was a significant increase in interest in remote job postings in the USA starting from the last week of February 2020 to the middle of March 2020. During this period, the number of interest, measured by searches, led to a 145% increase. Following the initial spike, the interest in remote jobs has continued to rise steadily, with a 12% increase from March 2020 to February 2023. The rate of searches also increased by 268.97% from 0.0126 to 0.0465. The results support the hypothesis that COVID-19 has led to a surge in the popularity of remote jobs, with companies and organizations becoming more resourceful in creating online jobs. The study highlights the impact of the pandemic on the job market and the potential benefits of increased flexibility and opportunities for online work. However, the study only pertains to the United States and does not provide insight into the quality of remote jobs, which may affect job retention. Further research could explore these factors and their implications for the future of work. Another constraint that must be communicated is that the interest, indicated by the search popularity of “remote jobs” is not an indicator of the number of remote job postings. Unfortunately, there is no open date found on remote job postings from employers and job websites. Currently undergoing the process to find such a dataset. The NYC Jobs Dataset is attached, showing the different job openings in NYC over the past few years, however, there is not a clear indication of whether the job can be done remotely, this will require more filtering and manipulation of data, coming soon.

Figure 5 presents a prediction that the analysis of causality will demonstrate a notable shift in the search volume for the term “remote jobs” before and following the onset of COVID-19 quarantine in the US. The study hypothesizes that interest in remote jobs will experience a substantial increase after the outbreak, and this trend will persist. The graph illustrates a positive slope that transitions to an even steeper positive slope, reinforcing the hypothesis.

Figure 6 displays the search volume trend for the term “remote jobs” over a period of five years. The graph depicts an initial surge in 2020, which has since sustained and carried forward up until 2023.

Another critical aspect to consider in the virtual job market is cybersecurity. With the increasing reliance on technology, the need for cybersecurity professionals is growing rapidly. A study conducted in 2019 by Morgan Frank found that tech workers are increasingly taking on cybersecurity responsibilities. This shift is reflected in the data, with the number of unfilled cybersecurity positions increasing from 1 million in 2014 to 3.5 million in 2021, a 31% increase over the past decade, compared to a 4% increase in other IT positions. This trend is set to continue, with cybersecurity predicted to be one of the fastest-growing industries in the next decade. It is also worth noting that cybersecurity professionals will need to grapple with ethical considerations as the use of AI becomes more prevalent in the field (Morgan 2019). Ensuring that AI systems are transparent, accountable, and aligned with ethical principles is crucial for maintaining trust in the technology and safeguarding against potential abuses. As the demand for cybersecurity professionals continues to grow, so too will the need for AI ethics experts who can help ensure that these technologies are used responsibly and ethically.

More about the Author

Ace Asim is a student at Duke Kunshan University majoring in Ethics and Leadership, Public Policy. His academic interests lay in ethics, law, and their intersection with software and Artificial Intelligence. He has previous experience working with R Programming for Statistics and is beginning his journey with Python. He wants to use his knowledge of programming and ethics to explore how Artificial Intelligence can become a useful, safe tool for the world.

Final reflections

As the course comes to a close, I can confidently say that I have experienced tremendous growth in various aspects of my life. Firstly, intellectually, I have gained a deep understanding of machine learning concepts and techniques, enabling me to tackle real-world problems using interdisciplinary data. Through practical applications, I have learned how to structure machine learning problems, identify relevant algorithmic tools, and evaluate performance to produce accurate and meaningful results.

Secondly, professionally, this course has equipped me with the necessary skills to thrive in the technology industry. I have expanded my knowledge of programming languages, including R and Python, and developed an interest in their intersection with ethics and law. This newfound passion has motivated me to explore how Artificial Intelligence can become a useful and safe tool for the world.

Finally, this course has encouraged me to reflect on living a purposeful life. The DKU 7 animating principles, particularly rooted in globalism and wise leadership, have played a significant role in shaping my perspective on what it means to live a purposeful life. Through collaborative problem-solving and lucid communication, I have gained a deeper appreciation for the value of working with others toward a common goal. Furthermore, as a global citizen, I feel a responsibility to use my skills to make a positive impact on society.

In conclusion, this course has been a transformative experience, providing me with the necessary skills to tackle real-world problems, grow professionally, and live a purposeful life. As I move forward in my academic and professional pursuits, I am grateful for the opportunity to have learned from the DKU community and look forward to contributing to positive change in the world.
